Here Comes Elliot's First Tooth! (9+ Mo)

[Alternate Title: Apples and Steaks, Here We Come!]

Books and parents alike will tell you that it's normal for kids to get their first teeth anytime after 6 months, up to beyond a year.  So ever since Ellie was 6 months old (and my friend's daughter, Ameena, popped 2 teeth right around her 6 month birthday) I've been feeling Ellie's gums every few days and blaming drool-y days or fussy moments on the fact that "she must be teething!".  3 months came and went and while the gums seemed hard or maybe even a little white-ish where the middle bottom teeth should be popping through, still everything looked symmetrical and nothing was raising up.

Over Memorial Day weekend we went up north and I noticed her right front bottom tooth looking especially white at the gums. I told Eric by the end of the weekend I'd bed she'd have a tooth, and while I was maybe a day short, that tooth does seem to be coming in, as of yesterday afternoon! Luckily I had a camera handy, and tried to snap some photos..  Enjoy!

Mother's Day and 2 Year Wedding Anniversary

After dropping numerous hints to Eric that I expected breakfast in bed on my first Mother's Day, he took the bait! We celebrated a day early so we could have our typical Sunday, running around playing sports, while Grandma Sandy and Glamma Suze got to visit on actual Mother's Day.  So Saturday morning I woke up, fed Ellie and went back to bed while Eric slaved over the waffle maker and prepped some sides to bring to me on a cute little tray.  He also surprised me with some much-needed soccer gear as a gift -- A perfect testament to our active lifestyle! Both Eric and Ellie also got me very sweet cards, which normally I am not a fan of the "Hallmark Holidays", but it is nice to get a sweet card that includes a note of how appreciated you are. Am I right, moms??

Me and my baby girl after my mother's day (observed) breakfast in bed!

Sunday (actual Mother's Day) we spent playing sports (my soccer, Eric's flag football and softball) and in between we enjoyed the beautiful day by giving Ellie some outdoor time. This was her first time really exploring in the grass, and she enjoyed it! It was fun to watch her hesitate as she took it all in and learned that yes, she could move around on this stringy green stuff, and nothing harmed her!

Mother's Day became an opportunity to show the grandmas her latest tricks, which include clapping, giving high fives and talking up a storm. Ba-ba-ba, Da-da-da and voices that span the whole range from deep growls to high giggles and squeals... this kid does it all!  I even heard a few Ma-ma-ma's in there... but, alas, Ellie isn't quite sure what she is saying, she just has fun making noise!

Mother's Day was followed by another celebration, as Eric and I celebrated 2 short but action-packed years of marriage! (CLICK HERE for a photo slide show of that special day...)  When I tell people it's our anniversary, I can't decide if it went by in a blink or if it seems like only two years! It doesn't seem like it's been two whole years since that amazing day, but at the same time we've accomplished so much in such a short time, it almost feels like it's been longer!

Either way, we made a point to get out and celebrate (albeit a day late, to accommodate our sports, yet again!).  We hired a babysitter and set out for a fancy dinner, just the two of us. Come to think of it, this might be the only time we have made for just ourselves where we didn't meet up with friends or go play sports -- but just enjoyed each other's company!  It reminded me why I love Eric so much... conversation is easy, communication is open and we both think that each other's corny jokes are *almost* as funny as we think our own  jokes are...  To me, this is the perfect relationship!  Not to mention we clearly make a beautiful baby. Bonus! :)

After dinner we bought a new vacuum (so romantic!), got some ice cream, and rolled back to the house by around 9pm. On the drive home I remember thinking how easy it is to forget to nurture the marriage when there is so much else going on with work, baby, sports, other people's celebrations...  And while I am grateful that we've found our way into what I think is a good balance, I think maybe now is as good a time as ever to remind myself (and, now, YOU) to sit back and enjoy what's right under my (your) nose. Of course, easier said than done, but feel free to hand out an extra hug or make a phone call to someone you haven't talked to in a while.  You're welcome. :)

Going out (a day late) to celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary!
(At least this year I could enjoy a cocktail!)

05.16.2012  We're just two happy, lucky girls!

And once Mother's Day and our anniversary had come and gone... it was time for Ellie's 9 month birthday!  It's crazy to think she's getting so big and learning so much (very quickly!) but we're trying to enjoy each moment while it lasts and we're learning right along with her!

Look who can pull herself up onto just about anything?!

05.21.2012 Ellie and Daddy... The best kind of eye candy!

Our next adventure is to spend some time up north with friends! Last night I had a small dose of anxiety as I worried about all the stuff we have to pack. Will we remember all the crucial items? What food should we take for Ellie? Should we take a baby gate for the lodge? Etc etc...  I almost talked myself out of going!  Yet I know once we're on the road and get into the vacation, we'll be grateful for the change of scenery, time with friends and another adventure under our belt with each other and Ellie!

Some Quick Vids... (~9 months)

I still want to post about Mother's Day (5/13) and our 2 year wedding anniversary (5/15)... but in the meantime, here's your Ellie fix!
A short video that shows the spectrum of Ellie's mobility around 9 months... Look out world! Sitting up, crawling on all fours, army-crawling on her belly and climbing up onto objects at her level!

Here's another showing Ellie learning to hold on to her bumbo while she straightens her legs... though she hasn't figured out how to move those little legs forward so she's not doing a push-up every time she reaches for one of her toys!

Movin' and Groovin' Ellie (~8 mo 1.5 wks)

I was originally trying to capture Ellie's hand-to-mouth coordination as she picks up a puff to put into her mouth.  She quickly does this and then proceeds to explore her hand and wrist movements, turning snack time into practicing her flair for the Baby Toerne Dance!

And Ellie's latest trick is propping herself up into a sitting position, all by herself!
"Look Ma! No hands!"  (ps- feel free to turn the volume off if you don't want to hear me cheering..!)

No, Elliot Hasn't Been Eating Paint (...Again...) [8 Months Old]

Back in early March, the daycare posted some photos of Ellie having fun with paint for the student art show:

Paint! ... Nom nom nom...

We're yet to paint at home (though it's on the to-do list since I bought paints for Eric's birthday for forthcoming daddy-daughter artwork...) Nonetheless, Ellie's face is turning colors!  It's due to the Gentian Violet I recently mentioned in my blog to treat thrush.  My midwife had referenced this handout on how to apply it, and last night was our third use. We know it's messy and has a staining effect on skin and clothing if contact is made, so we proceeded with caution. Ellie decided this was the time she wanted to resist and also blow raspberries, so even though Eric got the soaked q-tip into Ellie's mouth without touching her face, it still ended up getting on her face, my and Eric's hands, the boppy and probably my shirt.  Knowing it will fade from skin in 2-3 days, we weren't too worried about it, but it still gets weird looks from strangers and those at daycare that don't have the backstory!

[The violet had faded somewhat overnight....]

04.18.2012  ... What, you don't dye your baby's face violet?
There are mixed instructions about when to stop treatment, but hopefully we can swab with what's left of our Nystatin (her non-staining thrush Rx) and get Ellie back to her normal-skintoned self in the next few days! :)

Movin' On Up... Or, Forward, at least... (< 8 months)

Ellie continues to get more mobile every day. Here are two videos, only a few days apart that show how she's gone from reaching, rolling and swiveling, to an army style crawl that finally allows her to get to things directly in front of her!

Maybe it was just a matter of putting the right "carrot" out in front of her ... Ellie LOVES to open the oven door on her play kitchen, which triggers a song to play and more often than not gets a silly dance out of mommy.  Then she goes on to knock the egg, milk and/or cheese into the fridge door cut-outs...  It's really a routine at this point!

I'm sure soon enough this little soldier will go from dragging that leg around to cruisin' on all fours. In the meantime we're loving that we can watch her learn to become more mobile, while simultaneously going into denial that the house must be baby proofed! :)

Ellie on her Belly (Swiveling Video, ~7.5mo)

Ellie has added swiveling on her tummy to her repertoire of mobility-enhancing tricks, as shown here where I am pretty sure she is distracted by her own leg behind her! [In her defense, I think this is when she was down to a diaper because she was fighting a fever...!]

Here she is ~7.5 months old...

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

It's been a while since there's been an update about Ellie! As my brother so eloquently put it last time he asked, "What are Ellie's latest tricks?" [Pictures and videos to follow when I can find the time at home!]

Well, over Easter weekend we had some fun in Milwaukee (Ellie's 2nd trip!) and Ellie was showing off for the newest Toerne cousin, Silas (1 month)!

Rolling and Reaching... Ellie is now an old pro at rolling around, side-to-side, belly-to-back... whatever it takes to get herself where she thinks she wants to go! She's especially good at rolling to her side, or swiveling while on her belly to get things to her side or behind her.

When a toy or item of interest is directly in front of her, she's stretching herself out as long as possible to get one arm out in front of her to reach with. If she can't quite get at said toy, she'll push a little with her legs to get her body to move forward, but as of yet this process can still be very frustrating for her and if she's on the cusp of needing a nap or a meal, this can result in the most pitiful little sad face you've ever seen!!

Almost Crawling! Ell is getting up on all 4's now, but has not yet figured out how to lift her arms and legs to crawl forward. It's been fun to watch her first learn how to pull her belly up off the ground, and now to get up on all 4's more confidently and kind of rock forward/backward as that first crawling "step" is almost here!

She has been able to move backwards from the crawling stance by pushing on her arms and letting the rest of her body just slide backwards (belly on the ground). This makes her especially mobile on hard wood floors where she slides all over the place!

Strengthening Those Legs for First Steps... If you hold Ellie under her arms and let her stand on your lap or the floor, you can tell all that time in her jumper is paying off! Her legs are quite strong, and while she still lacks control that keeps them from buckling under her at times, she can stand with locked legs or push up from bent legs and.. as mentioned.. jump-jump-jump when her booty is supported by the jumper or mama's hand!

When we let her stand and hold onto us or a nearby piece of furniture, she's capable of standing there on her own, but we don't let our hands get too far away because she still tips over or lets her legs give out underneath of her, which could bang up baby if we're not careful!

Sitting Upright When picking Ellie up after a diaper change or out of her car seat, she now has enough strength to basically do a motion similar to an ab crunch and pull her upper body forward a little to "help" get her up. It's especially entertaining when getting her out of her car seat, as we are undoing the 5-point harness from around her shoulders and waist, and often times she sees hands coming toward her and automatically tries to lean forward. This can make getting her out even more tricky than before! She's learning patience though, as we fumble with the buckles and belts and free her of the car seat!

Also, when sitting on the floor, she can mostly keep her balance while sitting upright (legs out in front of her). Usually Eric or I will be on the floor with her, using the Boppy (U-shaped pillow) or our legs to protect around her sides and back, incase she decides to lean or tip to the side or back. Usually these changes of direction are inspired by needing to reach a toy, which generally Ellie just had in her hand until she decided to throw it for fun!

Chatty Ellie... Ellie continues to find her voice, and over the weekend became especially fond of the "Ba" sound. "Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba" was a common theme in Milwaukee! Also, sometimes she'll hold 'a' for a long time ("Aaaaaaaaaaaahh"). I will match her tone and volume, and we'll both be simultaneously holding the sound for a little while, which generally she enjoys! Or sometimes I'll tap my finger against her open mouth while she's making the long noise to get it to cut in and out quickly... Similar to how we used to make noises to be like an Indian Chief when we were growing up. She's caught on to this little trick quickly!

She's also capable of a little back-and-forth, where she'll make a short sound (usually of the "Ah" nature), and we'll repeat it back to her. And she'll do it again. Then we do it again... and so forth. All of that still doesn't begin to capture all the cooing, giggling and blabbing she's doing other times! Luckily she hasn't resorted to crying for attention (for the most part)!

Expanding Her Solids Menu I still feel like we're a little behind on the solids, but her menu has more recently included lots more bananas and peas. Favorite fall-backs are sweet potato, oats and rice cereal. Beans are next on the list!

She also is learning to pick up little puffs and put them into her own mouth to eat. It's adorable when she thinks she's put one into her mouth, only to find it's stuck to her slobbery hand. Or other times she'll see me holding it between my thumb and index finger, and instead of grabbing the puff from my hand, she'll grab my hand and lead the puff into her mouth! I'm loving her problem-solving skills! :)

"She must be teething..." Ellie is yet to sprout that signature first tooth from her bottom gums, but we joke around every time she's extra drool-y or gnawing on everything from toys to fingers. "She must be teething!" Or... she's just like any other baby, who loves to feel the different tastes and textures in her mouth! Soon enough, folks... soon enough she'll be biting into apples and chowing down on steak... :)

Doctor's Orders I'm not a big fan of medical intervention, so generally if Ellie doesn't have any major indicators of an issue (not sleeping, not eating, crazy high fever, etc...), we want to let the little things run their course. Runny nose/boogers, slight cough or slight fever have really been the worst of it and we never went beyond Tylenol for the fever. However, towards the end of March we've had a few things happen that set things into motion...

First, Ellie was in contact with another kid who was later confirmed to have Pertussis (whooping cough). The pediatrician said we didn't have to give her anything for it since Ell wasn't showing any symptoms and has had 3 of the 4 vaccinations against it. Yet the doctor did say we could give her meds as a precautionary measure. Since it can take up to a month for the symptoms to show themselves, the doctor's recommendation was to take the meds. So we had Ell on that for a few days as directed.

A few days after those meds ended, a fever showed up one day at daycare and we had to pull her out for a day and a half at the end of the week. I was more nervous about this fever because it didn't fix itself (or, even with Tylenol helping) within a day and the temp seemed very sporadic, getting quite high at times. But luckily it subsided after 2 days and again, she was eating and sleeping throughout, so we thought nothing more of it.

Then, a few days after the fever passed, another call from the daycare told us that Ellie had some whitening inside her lip and cheeks, which is a sign she could have Thrush (basically, a yeast infection of the mouth; nothing serious). I had actually noticed the whitening over the weekend a few days before this call. Yet she hadn't shown signs of discomfort while eating or sucking on her soother, so I thought maybe it'd go away on it's own. But now that the daycare brought it up, I took her to the pediatrician to be sure.

Once there, we learned she not only had thrush, but also a left ear infection. This meant starting her on two different meds (Nystatin and Amoxicillin, respectively) for these conditions. To top it off, the effect of taking Amoxicillin is a higher likelihood to get/continue to have thrush, so we couldn't take one but not the other.

Luckily, all these drugs will be done by tomorrow, so we're hoping our 9-month check-up in mid-May will prove to be ear infection free and another glowing check-up of a happy, healthy baby!

Smile! A lot of us noticed over the weekend that Ellie is getting especially used to the camera... It only took so much as the "beepbeep" of my camera telling me it was focused and ready to snap the perfect shot for Ellie to stop what she was doing and look in my direction with a smile! She's also quick to smile at others, be it a familiar face or not. We love it!

*Whew* ... So much happening, so little time to blog about it all! I hope you feel a little caught up on Miss Elliot now!

(Inner Monologue of) Putting the Breasts to Rest

My breastfeeding days are numbered.

I was lucky enough to be able to exclusively breastfeed for nearly 6 months, then we started mixing with formula to make our frozen stash last a bit longer. I am still pumping at work, though I can tell that the supply is on the decline, and I'm starting to have an internal (mental) battle.

There's the positive on one side telling me, "GREAT JOB! You DID it! You met your personal goal of breastfeeding until 6 months at a minimum, and have even surpassed that! You've been able to give Ellie that "liquid gold" and even have some stored up to keep at least some of it in her diet for some time to come, so rejoice! You're a super mom! "

But then, there's the other side, taunting me just a bit. "They say breastfeeding until one year is ideal. Why not do everything you can to keep the supply as high as possible? Is it laziness? Inconvenience? Are these reasons to not give your baby the best nourishment there is, for as long as possible?"

Part of it is I truly think my body is just slowing down production naturally. Thankfully, Ellie sleeps through the night. But, as supply and demand goes, the longer period of time I go without nursing, the less milk I make. Then, there are the evenings when I play sports after work and Eric will give Ellie a bottle. This means I miss 1 of the typical 2 evening feedings, and again, if I don't have to pump, demand is lowered. Finally, my recent travels meant even longer stints between pumping sessions. Even though I had a nice little cooler full to bring back to Ellie, that surely made my body think that milk demand was at an all-time low.

So, as fabulous as the run has been, I think I need to focus on the facts, most of which are positive.

-I was lucky enough to breastfeed at all. You hear stories from a spectrum of wanting-to-breastfeed-moms, some of whom have an overabundance, but others who couldn't get a good latch or keep up with demand from the get-go. I feel like I was at a nice happy medium and it got us this far, didn't it?

-I love the bonding and the nutritional aspects, and will dearly miss nursing her once my body calls it quits.  Just thinking about not doing it anymore tugs at my heart strings, but hey... I was able to nurse, to bond, to provide. Ellie won't remember it, but I will. We even have some (tasteful) photos to capture this amazing and natural process, and I don't want the anxious feeling of stopping to take away from the amazing experience of having done it.

When Ellie was just a few days old... getting our feeding bond on!
-I will always be delighted by the thought that my body is capable of everything it's done so far for Ellie. The pregnancy, the labor, the birth and the breastfeeding. Not to mention, operating on little sleep at times! God knows I've had it easier than most on these fronts, but nevertheless, the experience has given me a new found respect for this shell of mine!

-Breastfed or not, babies will become a product of their genes, and also their environment to some degree. I know people and kids that were not breastfed at all as babies, and they're some of the most fabulous characters I know! Eric and I come from strong gene pools, so Ellie had that going for her from day one. Throw in the breastfeeding that I was able to do, and I think I will try to allow myself to let any guilt melt away, because this kid is amazing, either way.
